Abdominoplasty
This is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from abdomen
and to tighten the abdominal muscles. Stretched abdominal muscles
are a result of many causes but mostly from pregnancy or weight loss
or gain. The abdomen wall consists of 3 parts; skin, fat, and muscles.
Protruding abdomen may be caused by excess fat in any part. The surgical
procedure applied depends on each part.
1. Removal of excess skin and fat
2. Removal of excess skin, fat and tighten the abdominal muscles.
This procedure is suitable for patient who has been pregnant. Patient
will has better shape, flat tummy, and reduce lax skin. This is a
more complicated surgery and requires sedation, therefore, patient
has to stay in the hospital for couple days. Long scar appears across
the abdomen and around the belly button. This
procedure is not appropriate for;
1. Patient who still want to get pregnant
2. Patient with psychological problem
3. Patient that can not accept the long scar
4. Patient who has horizontal scar above the belly button
Postoperation Care
- Patient must lie down in semi-lying position
for 4 - 5 days and continue lying in bed for another 2 days (get
out of bed only when necessary)
- Patient must wear abdominal binder for at least a month
- Sutures are generally removed in 10 - 14 days following surgery
- Patient can do all exercises in 6 weeks following surgery

Liposuction
Removal of body fat by liposuction has been
done for almost 30 years and proven to be safe. The objective of the
procedure is to improve body shape, not to reduce weight. Patient's
physical structure must be carefully assessed.
Principle of the liposuction is to reduce excess fat from the desired
areas using high pressure vacuum, Aspiration Pump which is connected
to a cannula. The physician makes a 0.50 cm.-hole in the desired area
then inserts the cannula through the hole to suction out the unwanted
fat cells.
The areas of the body that respond well to liposuction include the
chin, neck, top of the arms, abdomen, hips, and thighs. The areas
that give unsatisfied results are knees, calves, and ankles. The thickness
of fat layer in the desired areas should be more than 2 - 3 cm. Liposuction
normally is performed under local anesthesia so that the patient can
return home right after the surgery. In some cases that large amounts
of fat removed, general anesthesia and sedation are applied so that
it is safer for the patient to stay overnight in the hospital
ÔLiposuction procedure
The procedure can be done using 2 types of equipment
1. Using powerful vacuum for large suction area
2. Using large syringe for small suction area
Liposuction can not permanently reduce weight. The patient must have
good diet program as well. The obvious result is better body contour.
Prepare
for liposuction
Ø- Stop taking all medicines for 2 weeks prior
to operation especially aspirin-like products which can promote bleeding
- Keep yourself clean, have enough rest, don't be nervous, and stop
smoking for 2 weeks
- Stop consuming food and drink for about 6 - 8 hours before the operation
as well as have medical check-up
- Control your blood pressure as well as other health concern issues
Postoperative Care
- Patient must wear special conforming garments
over the area of fat removal for at least 4 weeks and should keep
on massaging the area to avoid forming waviness of sagging skin in
the first couple days.
- Blood-filled pocket protection pad can be removed after 3 - 5 days.
There will be some swelling and discoloration for 7 - 10 days. The
discoloration subsides in 4 - 6 weeks but the swelling may take 8
- 10 weeks to subside
- Patient is allowed to take all kinds of food with appropriate amount,
otherwise, you may get fat again
Infection
after the surgery is less frequency than other surgeries. There may
be depressions or contoured skin from too much fat removal.
Following surgery, moderate discomfort is well controlled with oral
pain medication. Applying elastic bandage over the area will prevent
bleeding and reduce swelling. Patient should stay home for about 4
- 5 days but should wait several weeks before resuming full exercise.
